Laser Hair Removal Aftercare: The Complete Guide

Getting the most out of your laser hair removal treatment doesn’t stop when you leave the clinic. What you do in the hours and days afterwards has a real impact on your comfort, your skin, and how smooth your results end up being. Below is our complete aftercare guide, based on dermatologist-recommended best practice and tailored to the Soprano ICE Titanium SE treatments we carry out at The Laser Suite in Winchester.

Immediately After Your Session

It’s completely normal for the treated area to look and feel a little like mild sunburn straight after treatment — some redness, warmth, and slight swelling around the hair follicles. This usually settles within a few hours.

To ease any discomfort:

  • Apply a cool compress or cold flannel to the area for 10–15 minutes
  • Avoid touching or scratching the treated skin
  • Wear loose, breathable clothing home to reduce friction

If you’ve had a consultation and patch test with us beforehand (which we always recommend before a first session), your skin should already be well prepared for this normal response.

The First 24–48 Hours

This is the window where most aftercare mistakes happen — and they’re easy to avoid once you know what to look out for.

Avoid:

  • Hot showers, baths, saunas, steam rooms and hot yoga
  • Swimming pools and sea water (chlorine and salt can irritate treated skin)
  • Vigorous exercise that causes heavy sweating
  • Tight clothing that rubs against the treated area
  • Retinoids, glycolic/salicylic acid, and other strong exfoliants or actives

Do:

  • Cleanse gently with a fragrance-free cleanser
  • Pat the skin dry rather than rubbing
  • Apply a fragrance-free moisturiser or pure aloe vera gel to soothe and hydrate
  • Keep the area cool and let it breathe

Sun Protection: The Non-Negotiable Step

Treated skin is more sensitive to UV light, so sun protection matters more than ever in the weeks after your session.

  • Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ to the treated area every day, including on cloudy days and near windows
  • Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds until the area has fully settled
  • Cover treated areas with clothing where possible if you’ll be outdoors for long periods

Skipping this step is one of the most common reasons people see pigmentation changes after laser treatment — so it’s worth building into your routine, not just for the first few days but throughout your full course of sessions.

The First Week

As the days go on, you may notice what looks like tiny dark dots in the treated hair follicles — this is completely normal and is simply the treated hair making its way out of the skin (often called “shedding”).

  • Let hairs shed naturally; don’t pluck, wax, or thread them out
  • You can gently exfoliate from around day 5–7 onwards (check with us first if you’re unsure) to help release shedding hairs
  • Continue daily SPF and gentle moisturising
  • Shaving is fine between sessions if needed — just avoid waxing, plucking or epilating, as these remove the hair root the laser needs to target

Between Sessions

Most clients need a course of sessions, typically spaced four to six weeks apart, to see full results — this is because laser only targets hairs in their active growth phase, and not all hairs are in that phase at the same time.

To get the most from each appointment:

  • Shave the treatment area 24 hours before your next session (don’t wax or pluck beforehand)
  • Avoid sun exposure and sunbeds in the two weeks before treatment
  • Keep skin moisturised and in good condition between sessions
  • Mention any skin reactions, medication changes, or sun exposure to your practitioner before each session

When to Contact Us

Mild redness and warmth are expected, but get in touch if you notice:

  • Blistering, significant swelling, or the skin feels hot and painful beyond the first day
  • Signs of infection (increasing redness, warmth, or discharge)
  • Any reaction that feels beyond what was discussed at your consultation

At The Laser Suite, every treatment is carried out personally by Liv, so you’ll always be speaking to the person who treated you if you have any concerns — not a call centre.
